Fort Benning: A Beautiful Setting for a Wedding Rich in History & Tradition

Fort Benning was first established in 1918 as a place for basic training for units in World War I. It has now become a thriving, self-sustaining community for soldiers and their families. The streets are lined with trees and stately white homes displaying their American flags with pride.

The Infantry Chapel, dedicated in 1934 to four fallen chaplains who gave their life preserves to others while their ship sank in WWII, is a beautiful backdrop for a wedding. With a stunning dome overhead and spiral staircase, this chapel was built with love and would be the perfect place for you to commit your love to each other. There is also a beautiful green pasture beside the chapel that would be perfect for an outside tent reception.

If you are not up for the possibility of the weather not cooperating with an outside reception, you could check out The Benning Club or The National Infantry Museum and Soldier Center to host your guests after the nuptials. These are also stunning settings that will make a huge statement to your friends and family about how proud you are to be a part of our country’s armed forces.

I am very honored to have been a part of my sister-in-law’s wedding a few months ago at Fort Benning. She was married at The Infantry Chapel and held her reception at The Benning Club. As the couple left the chapel, the traditional saber bearers were standing in the walk with white gloves and a beautiful arch of swords for them to pass under. Just as they got to the last pair of saber bearers they lowered their swords to stop the couple while the saber bearer on the right gave my sister-in-law a swat on the behind to welcome her into the army.

It was a wedding full of history, tradition, and beauty all around, the perfect place to say “I Do”.

Call to Duty

To prepare for a large increase in troops being deployed to Afghanistan due to the surge, the 60th Engineer Company(Vertical), 11th Engineer Battalion deployed from Ft. Benning Sunday. On their year long deployment, this company plans to not only expand the living quarters for the influx of troops coming in, but also try to improve the lifestyle of the soldiers already there by doing construction on buildings and helping build new roads. They may even add utilities, such as, electrical and plumbing. (I am sure the last will be greatly appreciated)

In order to accomplish their mission and move away from the place they just added electrical and plumbing, to a place without, the engineers must think about the new set of smiles they will see on the soldiers faces when they improve their living conditions as well.

This group of men and women leave homes, family and friends behind, not only to help us live lives of freedom everyday but also to make it a little easier for every man and woman that is already out there sacrificing everything they have for us.

Sweet Treats

Growing up in Georgia, I have enjoyed many of the traditionally southern treats. This past week I was thinking about some of my all time favorites: lemon meringue pie, banana pudding and sweet potato pie. Just outside Ft. Benning there is a great restaurant featuring some of the best southern fare around and if you save room for dessert you could try one of these sweet treats. The lemon meringue pie is jaw dropping just to look at and especially to try and eat. The pie is stacked high with meringue, filled with a creamy lemon center and finished with a crispy crust. Definitely the most amazing part of it though is the mile high meringue. I have never seen one stacked that high!

I decided to try to make my own lemon meringue pie this weekend. I achieved the crispy crust, creamy lemon center and pretty good meringue. It wasn’t stacked nearly as high, but all in all I think it was a success. I have to give my props to Country’s Bar B Que though. I hope you will stop by sometime soon, get cozy in a booth, sip some sweet tea, enjoy some great bar-b-que or chicken fingers, finish it off with a huge slice of lemon meringue pie and feel like a true southerner.

AFLAC Outdoor Games in Columbus

AFLAC is sponsoring the inaugural event which will include the nationally televised Stihl Timber Sports Series Collegiate and Professional Championships. The series includes the events – Hot Saw, Stock Saw, Underhand Chop, Standing Chop, Single Buck Saw, Speed Climb, Springboard and the Boom Runs. The Championships will be held in Columbus Ga for 2008 and 2009.

Additionally, the outdoor games will have a national BBQ contest, dockdogs, agility dogs and other outdoor activities. It will be a 3 day family event bringing national exposure to our region thru the ESPN channels.

Fort Benning GA Soldiers bring home the Gold

Six Soldiers ranging in rank from PFC to Major competed at in the 2008 Olympics. The competition was tough but 2 from Fort Benning GA brought home the Gold. PFC Hancock and SPC Eller are now wearing Gold. It is awesome to be the best in the world at anything but this is a special honor to represent our country and show the skill, development, and discipline of our military. We are very proud!

There are some terrific deals in the Fort Benning area right now. Builders are willing to pay some amazing concessions. Many are willing to pay 3% toward down payment assistance or anything you want like a privacy fence, refrigerator, washer/dryer. Q: How do you like living in Columbus GA.

A: It is great! We have lived here for a long time and really feel a part of the community

Q: What do you like best about Columbus

A: Columbus has most of the amenities of a large city like Restaurants, Theaters, and sports but you can drive all the way across town in less than 30 minutes. It still has a small town feel.

Q: How is the economy in Columbus?

A: Like other parts of the country we are experiencing some downturn because of the mortgage issues and gasoline prices but we are stonger than most because of the expansion of Fort Benning, AFLAC, and the new KIA plant – we picked up our first KIA supplier this last week.
